A notice in "LE GAULOIS" PARIS of November 1928:
La Révérende Mère Marie Alexis du
Tiers-Ordre régulier de Marie, Supérieure, de l'hôpital' français de Port-
Vila, vient dêtre décorée de la Légion
d'honneur. Le résident de France, M.
d'Arbousier, en informant Mgr Douceré
de cette distinction, ajouta "Je suis
fort heureux de voir récompenser les
services que cette religieuse rend à notre
hôpital et toute la population des Nou-
velles-Hébrides depuis de si longues
années."
Mère Marie Alexis of the religious order "Soeurs missionaires de la Société
de Marie" was born in Montbert (Loire Inférieure) in 1876 and came to Sydney on the VILLE DE LA CIOTAT on 25 April 1902 and to the
New Hebrides on 12 May 1902 on the BP steamer TITUS. Her first task was to supervise the construction of the new hospital, then at Anabrou (Vaté).
In 1911 the responsibility for the hospital went from the Société Française
des Nouvelles Hébrides to the French administration and in 1913 it moved to Port Vila.
Mère Marie-Alexis managed the hospital together with Soeur Marie-Eugénie until after
WWII.
