Postcard from Banika plantations, Russel Islands to Katoomba, N.S.W. 1d postcard rate. Cancelled Sydney 21.DE.08 and with the oval LOOSE SHIP LETTER known from 1905 to 1929. The cover arrived at Sydney on Dec 20 with the Burns Philp & Co. steamer Moresby. Timing was perfect for the Christmas greetings: written on 5 December and it should have made the 70 or so miles Katoomba within 3 days. The sender found the new stamps remarkable. The "II" seems to replace a non-functional "FE" as the cover is backstamped BUNGAY / MY 9 / 10. [10FE08]
Mourning cover supposedly from a member of the Solomon Islands administration (black coat of arms on reverse) to
Charles C. Bernays, member of the Queensland Parliament. I suppose that it brought condolences on King Edward'S VII death.
There's quite a lot of postage on it - 9d. It surely was a heavy letter ( cover weight alone: 6gm ) but I'd
favour the opinion Don Frank wrote me (thanks for this, Don): perhaps it was prepareed for registration but for some reason this did not
happen. |

Cover to "The Dowager Lady Walsh" on Ballykilcavan near Stradbally, Laois (Leix) or
Queen's County in Ireland, which has been home to the Walsh family from 1639
until today. The addressee was very likely the widow of John Allen Johnson-Walsh,
4th Baronet (1829-1893), Lady Harriet, daughter of Rev. William
Forde, and the letter maybe referred to the news of the marriage of Sir Hunt Henry
Allen Johnson-Walsh, 5th (and last) Baronet ( one of her sons)
with Grace Bruen on August 4, 1910. (Sorry, I had to write this when I saw such
an "exotic" (for me!) address - Roland). |
