Most of these New Hebridean postcards were never actually postally used. I think they were just
cancelled to order and then sold. Many have addresses, often in New Caledonia, presumably these were written on the cards later to
make them look postally used. Hmmm, many of these surface in the last months in France with very nice impressions of the Port Sandwich
cancel..... hmmmm. Est-ce qu'ils ont un "haut-goût? - Do they leave a bad aftertaste?
From a simple scan I would say no, they are ok. The fact that we can see them rather often now can be caused by the popularity the Belgian auction
site Delcampe gained in the last years in comparison to Ebay, which seems to be less popular in France when it comes to stamps and
postcards.

19 (17?) March 1907
New Hebrides picture postcard two France with two 5c New Caledonian stamps paying the colonial long message postcard rate
tied by PCH type 4 with block type and upright month block but missing year (curved marks instead).
Unusual for this cancel. Cancelled on arrival Avallon Yonne, 1 May 1907. (Treadwell coll.)
The card was carried to Sydney by the Messageries Maritimes
steamer PACIFIQUE (Captain Loumeau). She left Sydney on 6 March 1907 calling at Noumea, Port Vila, Nelson's Bay, Ringdove, Espiritu Santo, Ambrym, Mele, Port Vila &
Noumea and returned on 25 March. She arrived at
Noumea on the 10th, leaving on the 12th for the islands and returned to Noumea on the 18th. and normally stayed there for 2 days. Return to Sydney (where she was supposed
to arrive on 24th) was a bit delayed as a "kanaka" died of poisonous gases in the main hold generated by green copra from the New Hebrides. So she returned to Sydney on 25 March.
This means that the Vila cancel is more likely 17 March and not 19. [Roland Klinger]
